Let Our Time Stand for Something

No president! We’re been put on a list of terrorist countries list. Jos is
burning as ignorance and religion continue to be used as weapons against
the people.

Petrol queues continue to line the street. Traffic! Traffic! TRAFFIC!!!
Everyday – Everywhere! The frown on our faces gain pace, grow harsher. We
can hear the shuffling feet and minds of those locked behind closed doors,
carving out the cake amongst one another, so we may continue down this
path of injustice and inequality, so they may remain our leaders. Because
they know us better than ourselves, they know we’re too frightened and
apathetic; too comforted in our middle upper class lifestyles. Laughing,
because they know, we’ll continue to buy the overpriced land, the
overpriced food, pay for the diesel and the boreholes, sit in the traffic
to our meeting, to maintain the hustle. Any hustle, to eat, pay for the
SUV, school fees, weddings, whatever it takes, regardless of our dreams.

I don’t know about you all – but I’m tired. I’m stressed. Everything irks
me – the noise from the generator, the car in front of me, the smell, the
notion of democracy, every newspaper I pick up, the words are a blur, the
sycophancy and the irrational made rational. Then there’s our Foreign
Minister on BBC HARDTALK, smiling smugly making us all look like buffoons.
10 years experience he says – how many children born ten years ago, will
never be able to study abroad, because of the bomber; how many graduates
from 10 years ago will never realize their potential in the system;
because of the failed banks. The frustration is swelling, the options are
narrowing. Stuck in a protective bubble, I can ignore it all, but it’s
like the rats gnashing at our tailcoats – no matter how great Tribeca
nightclub looks, how much champagne we drink, how fabulous we look, how
much we can afford to live in isolation and how easily we 'seem' to be
able to manage all the obstacles. The edges of our clothes and lives
remain in tiny tatters and we will never really know what freedom really
is in this country. How long can it be everyman for himself and maybe his
family, alone?

I’ve said it a million times, read the book, bought the t-shirt and
screamed it from the mountains tops. What’s the point! NOTHING EVER
CHANGES!

So this time, what I’m simply asking myself – is this it? Am I happy with
this? For me, for my children and for us all, in our old age.

This is not a message that will change any lives. But maybe for some of
us, it may help towards the journey to find something more. It’s not a
question of what to do. That is simple. We all know what to do. That’s
never been our failing. Our failing is asking something be done NOW,
asking ourselves to do something NOW!

So I urge you all in whatever capacity you can. Whatever ideas you want
heard. Whichever voice you choose to stand upon. JUST STAND UP.

We are Nigerians. We are here. Change is in our hands.

LET OUR TIME STAND FOR SOMETHING.
